About the Coach

I am Rob Robson and was born in 1953 the youngest of a family of three. I have a lifelong interest in sport. My grandfather was a professional footballer and my older brother, Colin, an International Trampolinist. Colin also coaches and runs a successful trampoline club in Preston.

Having had a predominantly running background I moved into triathlon in 2002 and rapidly developed a passion for the sport. I have competed at all distances up to and including Ironman. My first Ironman event was the inaugural 2005 UK event at Sherbourne.

I have competed as a GB age group athlete at both sprint and standard distances and am a regular qualifier for the GB age group team.

During my learning phase (still ongoing) about triathlon I found there were many myths and folk laws about how to train and what to do when training and racing. It was also obvious that not all of them could be correct as much of the advice was conflicting.

I decided to develop my own knowledge and develop an understanding of how things should be done. This decision set me off on two separate but simultaneous paths. I began the process of becoming a qualified triathlon coach and also returned to formal education to study sports science.

From this first pathway I have become a Level 3 BTF coach. This in turn has led me to the role of Head Coach of Rugby Triathlon Club, as well as a coach educator with the BTF as a tutor on their coach education program.

From the second pathway I became a full time student at Warwickshire College at the Henly-in-Arden site studying Sport & Exercise Science. I graduated from this course with a Distinction in all modules which covered the following subject areas;

With the HND under my belt I went on to the University of Northampton to study for a BSc (Hons) in Sport & Exercise Science, graduating in the summer of 2008.

I have now been accepted on to the Masters Degree program for Sports Coaching at Birmingham University commencing in October 2008.

I have a developed a great passion for triathlon and possess a great deal of knowledge, both at an academic and practical level, which has already helped many athletes to develop their own skills and knowledge and get more from the sport they love.

My Philosophy

To help every athlete, irrespective of age, ability or gender, to become the best they can be. To guide athletes to realise their goals and gain the maximum enjoyment from the sport in an environment of mutual respect and trust. To treat every athlete as an individual and work in an athlete focused way.
